D+ Improv troupe is Drake University’s only improv troupe. We make stuff up and put on shows throughout the year!
What is improv?
Improvisational comedy is a “form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience, or draw on some other source of inspiration to get started.”
Improv is completely made up on the spot, and emphasizes listening, miming, relationship building, character construction, and continuity. Actors construct entire stories with dynamic plot lines all for the enjoyment of the audience.
Part of the fun of improv comes from the hilarity and absurdity of making things up. The stage can become a restaurant, then a dungeon, then a home, and then a garbage dump. Characters can be and say anything they want.
History of D+ Improv Troupe
D+ improv troupe has been around since 2013. They have 15 members right now, and they meet two times each week to rehearse. They have a Halloween show and a Dead Day show each year. They also perform at different campus events throughout the year.
Auditions are every September, and the troupe usually brings on between 3 and 4 new actors each year. Every October the troupe has a Halloween themed show called A Nightmare on Painted Street, and every Dead Day they have a Dead Day show for the whole campus. These Dead Day shows are in December and May.
